New Devices Listed Directly on Huawei Mall, Bypassing Traditional Launch Event. In a move that surprised industry watchers and fans alike, Huawei has chosen to forgo a traditional launch event and instead directly listed its new Mate X5 foldable phone and Mate 60 5G series on Huawei Mall (Vmall). This comes despite earlier reports that speculated Huawei would host a launch event this September for these new devices and other additions like the Mate 60 Pro+ 5G.
Huawei Mate X5’s Features
The Huawei Mate X5 sports a 6.4-inch OLED LTPO external display with a resolution of 2504 x 1080 pixels and a 20.9:9 aspect ratio. Notably, the device boasts up to a 300Hz touch sampling rate and is protected by Kunlun glass. On the flip side—quite literally—the device has a 7.85-inch foldable OLED LTPO display that provides a resolution of 2496 x 2224 pixels and an 8:7.1 aspect ratio. Both screens offer a variable 1Hz-120Hz refresh rate and support for 10-bit colors and P3 color gamut.
For security measures, Huawei Mate X5 is equipped with a side-facing fingerprint scanner.
Under the Hood of Huawei Mate X5
Although details about the chipset remain undisclosed, it is speculated that the Mate X5 may be powered by the Kirin 9000s chipset, the same that fuels the Mate 60 series. It is also yet to be confirmed if the device supports 5G connectivity. What is certain is the device’s ample 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
Camera and Battery Life
The Mate X5’s camera setup includes an 8-megapixel front camera, and a rear array with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with OIS support. The phone runs on Harmony OS 4.0 and features a 5,060mAh battery that supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging.
Pricing and Availability
While the price of the Mate X5 series remains unconfirmed, the device and its Collector’s Edition are currently on pre-sale at Huawei Mall with a deposit of 1,000 Yuan (~$136). The sale is set to go live on September 15. However, details on the device’s global availability are still under wraps.
