General Motors and Hyundai have formalized long-standing rumors of a collaboration, agreeing to jointly develop five new vehicles. Most of the joint projects are being developed for the South American market.

The planned models include passenger cars, crossovers, a compact pickup truck, and a mid-size pickup truck to be produced under GM’s leadership. Hyundai is handling the development of the remaining models.

All vehicles are being designed with a flexible infrastructure designed to be compatible with both internal combustion engines and hybrid systems. While the brands are jointly developing these vehicles from a technical perspective, the interior and exterior design of each model is uniquely shaped by the brand identities of GM and Hyundai. The models designed for the South American market are targeted for sale in 2028.
In addition to these five models, it was announced that an all-electric commercial vehicle, exclusively for North America, will also be developed as part of the partnership. The model in question could be based on the Hyundai ST1 or Kia PV5 platform and could replace the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana in General Motors’ product lineup.
GM and Hyundai’s joint production target is to reach 800,000 vehicles annually. The companies are not limited to vehicle development but are also collaborating in numerous areas, including material procurement, logistics, transportation, and raw material supply. Low-carbon steel, automotive components, and complex electronic systems are also among the areas being considered for collaboration.
If these plans are implemented, a comprehensive integration process is expected between the two companies’ operations in South and North America.
