Instagram has made a significant change that directly affects the user experience. The platform has taken a step back from the long-criticized photo cropping practice and announced that it has started supporting the 3:4 aspect ratio. Now, photos taken in this format will not be cropped when shared on the platform and will be displayed in their full form.

Instagram finally offers the expected innovation

In the statement, Instagram emphasized that the 3:4 format is the default shooting ratio on almost all smartphone cameras. With this change, users will be saved from having to rearrange their photos specifically for social media or experiencing image loss due to cropping.

Until now, Instagram allowed sharing photos in a maximum of 4:5 ratio in vertical format. For this reason, images taken in a 3:4 ratio, in particular, were automatically cropped when uploaded to the application and caused content loss. This situation will be eliminated with the new regulation.

Photos in a 3:4 ratio can now be published without cropping in both single-frame posts and multiple posts containing up to 10 photos. Without the need for users to make any additional edits during sharing, the photos will reach their followers directly as they were taken.

This change is one of Instagram’s latest steps towards offering more flexibility in content formats. For example, another update in January stated that photos would start to be displayed in rectangular frames in the grid view on user profiles.
