Apple could be preparing a nostalgic accessory comeback for the iPhone 17 Air, its upcoming ultra-thin device expected to debut next month. The company has reportedly tested a case that resembles the classic iPhone 4 Bumper. This has sparked speculation that older design ideas may return in modern form.
iPhone 17 Air may get a Bumper case inspired by iPhone 4

According to Mark Gurman, Apple has considered a case that wraps around the phone’s edges while leaving the back exposed. That design matches the Bumper case Apple introduced with the iPhone 4 in 2010. The case became widely known after Apple gave it away for free during the “Antennagate” controversy.
For the iPhone 17 Air, the Bumper concept could strike a balance between minimal protection and showcasing the slim hardware design. It would also serve as a subtle callback to one of Apple’s most talked-about accessories.
iPhone 17 Air could also see a Smart Battery Case comeback
In addition to the Bumper-style case, Apple is rumored to be developing a Smart Battery Case for the Air model. Since the thinner frame limits battery capacity, an external pack would extend runtime without altering the phone’s aesthetics. The company hasn’t sold a Smart Battery Case since the iPhone 11 lineup in 2019, so this would mark its return after several years.
Case lineup still unconfirmed
Gurman cautions that the Bumper-style design may not move past testing. Still, combining a retro-inspired option with a practical battery extender could appeal to both nostalgic Apple fans and power users. With the iPhone 17 Air expected next month, we’ll soon find out whether the iPhone 4 Bumper makes a modern comeback.
