Apple is planning a major camera upgrade for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. According to leaks from Korean sources, the iPhone 20 series, expected to be introduced in 2027, will use a proprietary technology called the LOFIC sensor. This new technology aims to bring camera performance to the level of human perception.
What is the iPhone 20 LOFIC sensor, and what will it offer?
LOFIC, or Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor, is an advanced imaging technology. This system ensures that all details in both very bright and very dark areas are preserved within the same frame. Furthermore, the new sensor is expected to offer up to 20 stops of dynamic range.

This dynamic range is competitive with today’s high-end professional cinema cameras. More importantly, LOFIC technology allows each pixel to store different amounts of light based on the brightness of the scene. This preserves details lost in traditional sensors, resulting in exceptional image quality.
According to sources, Chinese manufacturers will adopt this technology sooner. Brands like Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei are expected to begin using LOFIC sensors developed by Sony in their flagship phones in 2026. Apple will join the race with a more compact and specialized LOFIC sensor developed in-house in 2027.
There’s also speculation that Apple wants to celebrate the iPhone’s 20th anniversary with a special model. Just as with the transition from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X (10), the company is rumored to skip the iPhone 19 model after the iPhone 18 and instead use the “iPhone 20” name directly.
