Rising production costs are pushing game console giants to find new and creative solutions. According to a claim made by billbil-kun, a well-known leaker, Sony is preparing to significantly revamp the PlayStation 5 hardware to avoid a third price increase in Europe.
New PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: Less Storage, Same Price
According to the leak, Sony will release a new revision of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, model number CFI-2116. The most striking feature of this new model will be its reduced storage capacity. The 1 TB SSD in the current version will be replaced by an 825 GB SSD in the new model. This means that players will have approximately 700 GB of available space.
With this move, Sony is reportedly aiming to reduce production costs while keeping the console’s price tag in Europe at €499. The company will also clearly state the new storage capacity on the box to avoid misleading consumers.
It’s emphasized that this hardware change is currently only planned for the Digital Edition, which lacks a disc drive, and will not affect the standard PlayStation 5 model. The new PS5 Digital Edition, with reduced storage, will reportedly hit shelves in Europe starting September 13, 2025.
While Sony has yet to officially address these claims, its strategy of keeping prices stable in the face of rising costs is considered a logical step for the industry.
