Joker 2 has unfortunately caused a major disappointment at the box office. The sequel, which was released on October 4, grossed $121 million worldwide during its opening weekend, far below the first film, which crossed the $1 billion mark.
Joker: Folie à Deux (Joker 2) will go digital in less than a month
Joker: Folie à Deux (Joker 2) was released with high expectations following the global success of the first film, which earned Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award. The first film grossed $335 million in the U.S. and $1.078 billion worldwide, even setting the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
However, the second film has failed to repeat this success. Despite adding a star like Lady Gaga to the cast, the box office performance has been a major letdown. By its second weekend, the film had grossed $51.5 million in the U.S. and $165 million globally, which is far below its $450 million budget.
Lady Gaga couldn’t save it: Joker 2 crashed at the box office
Joker: Folie à Deux, released on October 4, has fallen short of expectations at the box office.
Reliable industry sources estimate that Joker 2 will cost Warner Bros. a loss of at least $150-200 million. Another source suggests the loss may be around $125 million.
After the film’s failure, the fees paid to actors and directors came into focus. It’s reported that Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and director Todd Phillips were each paid $20 million, while Lady Gaga, who played Harley Quinn, earned $12 million.
To minimize the projected loss, Warner Bros. decided to release Joker 2 on digital platforms less than a month after its theatrical release. The film will be available for purchase on digital platforms starting October 29.
