OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has been sued, with Microsoft also being named as a defendant. The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI used “stolen data” to train its artificial intelligence. It is claimed that the company developed models like ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, DALL-E, and VALL-E using freely available data and profited from it.

Lawsuit filed against OpenAI for “unauthorized use of data”

A new lawsuit filed in the United States seems to be causing trouble for OpenAI. The plaintiffs claim that the personal information of millions of people worldwide, including children, was used to train the artificial intelligence. It is alleged that comments and messages written by people on platforms taught ChatGPT the human language.

The plaintiffs also accuse OpenAI of collecting large amounts of personal data from the internet without the consent of users. The 157-page lawsuit claims that the company collected social media posts, identification information, keystrokes, and payment details.

The filing provides examples from various social media platforms. It states that photos data from Snapchat, music preferences from Spotify, and financial information from Stripe were collected.

The lawsuit demands transparency regarding how the company uses its resources and data. Additionally, compensation is sought for the alleged unauthorized use of data. It is also stated that OpenAI should cease the “illegal” use of freely available data on the internet.
