Mercedes-Benz Receives Approval for Level 4 Autonomous Driving Tests in Beijing
Mercedes’ Level 4 autonomous vehicles can effortlessly handle tasks such as parking in heavy urban traffic, making U-turns, navigating intersections, and performing unprotected left turns. On highways, they feature capabilities like automatic lane changes when the vehicle ahead slows down and automated toll passage. In emergencies, they can automatically park in a safe location by applying a minimum-risk strategy.
Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker to commercially offer Level 3 autonomous driving technology in Europe and America before advancing to Level 4. Last year, it became one of the first companies to receive permission to conduct Level 3 highway tests in Beijing.
Mercedes is adding a new CLA-based electric crossover to its electric vehicle lineup. The new vehicle is expected to rival the Tesla Model Y.
Since 2021, the company has been continuously improving system performance in closed test areas in China. Local R&D efforts aim to adapt the system to specific road conditions in China, such as road signs, construction zones, bus lanes, and wrong-way traffic.
