Meta announced that a new artificial intelligence system is being tested to verify user ages on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger platforms. With this system, the company aims to detect users who appear older than they are and switch them to a safer “teen account” profile.
Meta will detect age with artificial intelligence
The technology being tested estimates the user’s age based on behavioral cues and interaction patterns on the platform. Meta will also implement various control measures to increase the accuracy of the system.

Thanks to these measures, when the artificial intelligence detects that a user may be young, it will suggest that the account be switched to teen mode for that person. However, considering the possibility that the system may make mistakes, users are also offered the option to remain on the adult account.
The teen account, which was launched on Instagram last fall, was recently integrated into Facebook and Messenger. This type of account attracts attention with its stricter privacy policies and parental controls.
Teen accounts operate in private mode by default and restrictions are imposed on users’ messaging with strangers. Meta argues that this innovation allows child users to spend time more safely in the digital environment.
The company announced that it has switched more than 54 million young users to this account type to date. It was also shared that 97 percent of users in the 13-15 age group have enabled the privacy and security settings offered by young accounts. Users under the age of 16 must receive parental approval to exit young accounts.
