MG, a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant SAIC, is making an ambitious move in the electric vehicle market. The company announced that it will introduce 13 new electric models over the next two years with a $1.4 billion investment. These new models will not only consist of fully electric vehicles. Range-extender (EREV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles will also be released.
MG’s new electric vehicles are coming
Acquired by SAIC in 2005, MG has become one of the brand’s strongest players in the global market. While MG reached sales of 153,100 units in Europe in the first half of 2025, it performed less well in China during the same period, with 57,254 units. One of the main reasons for the brand’s weak sales in China is considered the limited availability of new energy vehicles.

MG General Manager Chen Cui stated that demand for gasoline-powered MG models remains strong in the Chinese market. He stated that the MG5 sedan, a favorite among young buyers and tuning enthusiasts, maintains its popularity. However, Cui emphasized that MG will no longer focus solely on internal combustion engine vehicles but will also take an active role in the new energy vehicle market.
Cui stated that the foundation of their offensive will not be solely low prices, but will utilize SAIC’s robust technologies and supply chain. He also emphasized that SAIC’s involvement in joint projects with brands such as Audi and Huawei will demonstrate MG’s technological prowess.
The 13 new models to be introduced include fully electric, range-extender, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company plans to offer advanced vehicle connectivity solutions in collaboration with Oppo. It also aims to incorporate semi-solid-state battery technology in its new models.
The first product under this strategy will be the all-electric MG4 hatchback. The vehicle, which went on pre-sale in China on August 5, will be officially launched on August 29. A semi-solid-state battery version of the vehicle will also be released before the end of the year. Measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width and 1,551 mm in height, the MG4 comes with a single electric motor producing 120 kW (161 hp) at the rear axle.
