Microsoft’s popular office tools include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, while Outlook is more geared toward corporate use. However, the company announced that it will discontinue one of its rarely used applications, Microsoft Publisher, as of October 2026.
Microsoft has officially pulled the plug on another application
According to an email shared by Windows Latest, Microsoft announced that support for Publisher will be ending. It also directed users who want to migrate their data to the official support portal and offered alternatives on how to convert files. The company recommends converting Publisher files to PDF or DOCX format.

When we recently installed Microsoft’s free version of Office, we noticed that Publisher was still bundled with other Office applications. However, this will change in the near future and the application will be completely removed from the Microsoft 365 suite. After October 2026, Microsoft 365 subscribers will not be able to access their files through the Publisher application.
Microsoft is ending support in order to reduce interest in this application and to highlight alternative Office tools. For those who want to create advertising posters or flyers, applications such as Word, PowerPoint or Designer offer a wide range of templates. The company shares a detailed list of which types of templates are available in each application, stating that they can meet the needs of users.
For users who do not have Microsoft 365, there are also free alternatives such as Canva. Canva offers a wide range of templates and a user-friendly interface, but it requires an internet connection.
So, what can you do with Publisher files? First of all, it would be a good step to convert files that you may need in the future to PDF format now. If you have special templates that you use frequently, you can convert them to PDF using the “Export” option. You can also perform a bulk conversion using macros, which is one of the methods Microsoft recommends.
Microsoft’s decision to end support for Publisher came after the company announced that it would be discontinuing Skype. Like many people who have been using Microsoft Office for years, you may have never used Publisher. However, it is definitely an important tool for some users. Do you think that removing Publisher would be a significant shortcoming? You can share your opinions in the comments section below.
