At the Xbox Games Showcase event, Microsoft announced that it will release two new handheld gaming consoles later this year. Developed in collaboration with ASUS, the devices are named ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. They combine the flexibility of the Windows operating system with the core Xbox experience.

When powered on, the devices boot directly into a full-screen Xbox interface, specifically optimized for handheld use. According to Xbox, the system minimizes background activity and delays non-gaming tasks to prioritize gaming performance.

This setup allocates more system resources to games. The goal is not just to enhance memory and frame rates or create an immersive experience — these features are already built into the new devices. All these technical enhancements are made possible through the software freedom offered by Windows.
The ROG Xbox Ally models feature a built-in Xbox button, ergonomic grip zones, and accessibility features found on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. These details ensure that the handhelds still deliver the classic Xbox experience.
In terms of hardware, the Xbox Ally model runs on the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, designed to balance performance with power efficiency for longer battery life. It comes with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage.
The other model, Xbox Ally X, targets gamers who seek higher performance and visual fidelity. It uses the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, built to support upcoming AI-powered games and applications with future-ready hardware compatibility.
Pricing, release date, accessories, and pre-order information have not yet been shared. These details are expected to be revealed in the coming months. What do you think about these devices? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
