There is a surprising movement in the deepest parts of our planet. According to reports, scientists have discovered that the Earth’s inner core has reversed direction and is now changing shape. This unexpected event could affect the Earth’s magnetic field and radically change what is known about the internal structure of our planet. So what is happening in the inner core? Here are the details!
Earth’s inner core is changing shape!
The Earth’s inner core is a solid sphere made mostly of iron and nickel. Recent research had revealed that since 2010, the rotation speed of this core had decreased and eventually changed direction. However, the latest developments are not limited to a change in direction. Scientists have discovered that the inner core is now also changing shape, bending and deforming.

A 2024 study analysed seismic waves generated by earthquakes and found that the topography of the inner core has changed. According to experts, the reason for these changes may be the pressure of liquid iron and nickel in the outer core on the inner core. Just like landslides on Earth, large-scale shifts are occurring in the inner core.
This discovery could also have a major impact on our planet’s magnetic field. This protective field, called the magnetosphere, defends the Earth against harmful radiation from the Sun. It is not yet known how the deformations in the inner core will affect the magnetic field.
Although scientists cannot yet fully explain why this process is taking place, they think that it may be part of a wider change. For now, the data obtained is limited, but research in the coming years may shed light on this mystery.
