Thanks to advanced radar technology, NASA has rediscovered a secret Cold War base in Greenland called Camp Century. The scans made with the UAVSAR (Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar) system revealed the base buried under the glaciers in full detail. So, who does the base belong to? When was it founded? Details in our news…
NASA finds secret Cold War-era base in Greenland glaciers
The discovered base was actually built as part of “Project Iceworm”, a controversial project developed by the United States at the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. Begun in 1959, Camp Century was designed to use Greenland’s strategic location to launch 600 nuclear ballistic missiles against the Soviet Union.
The base consisted of tunnels dug 30 meters deep, and a network of 4,000 kilometers was planned. However, due to the constant movement of glaciers and engineering difficulties, the project was abandoned in 1967. NASA’s UAVSAR system provided much more detailed imaging than previous technologies, revealing the base’s individual structures and facilities.
Previously undocumented details revealed the scale and complexity of Project Iceworm. But the tragedy is that this discovery is not only of historical significance, but also poses serious environmental risks. This is because Camp Century’s discovery was prompted by the rapid melting of Greenland’s glaciers.
The melting of the glaciers may have not only released millions of cubic kilometers of water, but may have also released contaminants left on top. If the risky substances have indeed been released into the water, we face serious environmental problems in the future. Future research will reveal the truth.
