It seems Netflix has lost confidence in expanding Zack Snyder’s 2021 zombie hit Army of the Dead into a broader franchise. Multiple projects that were meant to expand the Army of the Dead universe have now been scrapped or delayed indefinitely.
Netflix abandons plans for Army of the Dead universe
Army of the Dead was envisioned as the launchpad for a whole new zombie-focused film and TV universe on Netflix. In addition to the prequel film Army of Thieves, an animated spin-off series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas had been announced. A sequel titled Planet of the Dead was also in development.
However, according to sources at the streaming giant, Netflix has decided to quietly cancel plans for the anticipated animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. The sequel Planet of the Dead has also been shelved with no clear path forward. Only Army of Thieves was released as planned, but it seems to have not met Netflix’s expectations to justify a full blown universe.
This points to waning interest from Netflix in large interconnected franchises under Snyder. A similar fate now seems to have befallen Rebel Moon, Snyder’s other proposed multi-film sci-fi universe for Netflix. While a second film was greenlit in addition to reshoots, ambitious plans to build out that world long term appear to be on unstable ground. With the abandoned Army of the Dead projects, Netflix may be shying away from betting big on more elaborate director-driven universes.
