Embracer Group, which has acquired dozens of game studios, has been dealing with the restructuring of these developer companies for a while. Embracer, which has downsized many studios in this context, has recently overhauled 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks. Almost half of both companies were laid off.
3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks fire hundreds of people
3D Realms, founded in 1987 and known for the Duke Nukem series, joined Embracer Group through Saber Interactive last August. Founder Scott Miller, who confirmed the layoffs at 3D Realms, declined to give an exact number.
On the other hand, Slipgate Ironworks, also known as Interceptor Entertainment, was reportedly affected by layoffs. Embracer, which acquired Saber Interactive in 2021, also took Slipgate under its wing. However, the developer of Daymare: 1998 and Duke Nukem II had to downsize.
In his statement, Embracer Group spokesman stated that the restructuring continues. But he said the company does not comment on “rumors or speculation.” He confirmed that they are still working on organizational changes that were introduced earlier this year.
Saudi Arabian Savvy Games Group was preparing to invest $2 billion in the company earlier this year. However, after the negotiations were unsuccessful, the restructuring process was started.
The number of layoffs or affected projects is unclear at this time. However, we know that Slipgate is actively working on Phantom Fury and Graven games. 3D Realms, on the other hand, is developing some games that are still in the early stages, such as Core Decay.
