Threads made its debut in 2023 as a companion app to Instagram, but it has steadily transformed into a standalone platform. In its latest move, Meta has rolled out a new filtering system designed to give users more control over what they see on the app.
Meta unveils new content filters for Threads
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, shared the update and explained that Threads users can now block specific words, phrases, and even emojis using personalized filters. These filters can be applied for a limited time or set to remain active indefinitely, helping users shape their experience on the platform.

Unlike the earlier version of the filter system, which relied heavily on Instagram settings, this new approach works entirely within Threads. Users no longer need to sync preferences between the two apps, making Threads feel more like its own space rather than an extension of Instagram.
Mosseri also mentioned that Threads should feel like a safe and expressive environment, suggesting that more user-focused features could be on the way. While not all users can access the update just yet, Meta plans to make it available to everyone soon.
One of the standout additions is the ability to mute terms temporarily. For instance, if you’re avoiding spoilers from a new show, like Squid Game, you can mute related keywords for up to 30 days—complete with a countdown showing how many days remain.
