After an illustrious 18-year career, the Nissan GT-R R35 is officially saying goodbye to the road. First unveiled in 2007, the iconic Japanese sports car has unfortunately closed its last chapter. On February 28, Nissan officially announced the end of production in Japan and the cessation of orders for the model. In a message posted on its official website, the company thanked customers for almost 20 years of support. Here is the end of the legend…
Nissan GT-R R35, nicknamed Godzilla, will no longer be produced
In fact, production for the North American market ended in October 2024 with the T-Spec Takumi and Skyline limited series. Previously, the GT-R was withdrawn from Australia and New Zealand in 2021, and from Europe and the United Kingdom in March 2022. Increasingly stringent safety, emissions and noise regulations are said to have made Nissan’s decision inevitable.

The Nissan GT-R R35 was nicknamed “Godzilla” for its powerful performance and became one of the most enduring and beloved sports cars. Officially unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, it received several styling and technical updates in 2010, 2016 and most recently in 2023. Under the hood has always been a 3.8-liter V6 biturbo engine.
This engine has evolved over time, from an initial 473 horsepower (353 kW) to 565 horsepower (421 kW) in the latest standard version and 600 horsepower (447 kW) in the Nismo version. Inevitably, the GT-R’s prices have risen in parallel with this increase in performance.

Equipped with special designs and technical enhancements, the limited editions commanded a hefty price tag and secured a firm place among the upper segment sports cars. However, fan interest has never waned, as evidenced by the orders coming in right up to the last day. Right now, the future of the GT-R dynasty seems to be heading in an electric direction.
The concept unveiled in 2023 hinted at an all-electric R36 model. However, this model will be based on solid-state batteries and is not expected to be launched before 2028. A hybrid transition period is also not ruled out, but this will largely depend on Nissan’s financial resources. Meanwhile, fans continue to expect a surprise from the Japanese brand.
