With its vast video archive and ever-expanding features, YouTube offers its users a vast resource. However, this richness also makes it difficult to make decisions. Finally, the platform started showing random videos to users with the Play Something feature.
YouTube is testing the Play Something feature
YouTube is experimenting with a new feature that will enrich the user experience on its Android app. The new button, called “Play Something”, opens random content, eliminating the user’s need to make a selection.
The new button, which appears in the bottom right corner of YouTube’s Android app, above the bottom menu, opens a vertical video player similar to the Shorts format. Users are offered personalized video recommendations based on their viewing history and preferences.
On the vertical video screen, there are buttons for basic interactions such as liking, disliking, commenting and sharing. At the bottom is a timeline. This feature uses Shorts not only for short videos but also for standard videos.
The “Play Something” button disappears when the mini-player that appears at the bottom of the screen is activated. This design choice allows users to focus on the video while keeping the interface organized.
