Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang did not attend the inauguration of the new US president Donald Trump.Instead, he traveled with company employees to China to celebrate the Lunar New Year. This shows that it has chosen its side in the US-China tensions.
Why Nvidia CEO went to China
The CEO of Nvidia, who had previously announced that he would not participate in the US Presidential election, said that he would be celebrating with employees on this date. In this context, he said it shows “the importance of the special day and the company’s commitment to its employees”.
Huang will reportedly attend similar celebrations in China next week. The visits aim to strengthen Nvidia’s ties with its employees and partners in Asia. The CEO’s visit follows US export restrictions on artificial intelligence chips.
New rules by President Joe Biden’s administration limit exports of high-end chips to countries outside certain US allies, including Taiwan. It also maintains a ban on exports to China, one of Nvidia’s key markets.
Huang did not comment on President Trump’s approach. “I look forward to congratulating the Trump administration when they take office,” he said.
Huang also met with TSMC CEO C.C. Wei to discuss ramping up production of Blackwell chips. The cooperation with TSMC, Nvidia’s main supplier, is important for the company to meet the growing demand for semiconductors.
