OpenAI, one of the largest players in the artificial intelligence field, is making a major investment in India. The company plans to build a massive data center with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt in the country. This project is considered one of OpenAI’s biggest breakthroughs in Asia.
OpenAI to Build Data Center in India
The company is in talks with local partners for the data center. If the project comes to fruition, it will be one of the largest data centers in India. Along with tech giants like Microsoft and Google, Asia’s wealthiest businesspeople are also making similar investments in India.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman may announce the project during his visit to India this month. Last month, Altman announced that they would open their first office in India and noted the incredible rapid adoption of AI in the country.
Altman noted that the number of ChatGPT users has quadrupled in just one year and expressed his excitement about investing further in India. The company has also launched a special $5 monthly subscription in the country to reach more users.
OpenAI has launched a major global infrastructure initiative under the Stargate brand. It is also engaged with more than 30 countries as part of its “OpenAI for Countries” initiative. The data center in India will also address concerns about users’ data being transferred abroad.
The company is also committed to developing local language models as part of the Indian government’s $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission. What are your thoughts on this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
