Panasonic has unveiled a new generation of lithium-ion batteries that will make waves in the electric vehicle market. The batteries, developed by the company under the name 4680, are said to be designed to be much larger and more powerful than the previous generation 2170 batteries. So why are these batteries so important? Panasonic claims that these batteries will significantly improve the performance, range and efficiency of electric vehicles.

First of all, the size of the 4680 batteries is quite remarkable. Compared to the traditional 2170 batteries, the new battery cells are wider and longer and can store much more energy. Panasonic states that the energy density of the new batteries has increased by 500%.
This gives electric vehicle manufacturers the opportunity to provide longer range using fewer battery cells. At the same time, using fewer batteries also contributes to lighter vehicles, which has a positive impact on acceleration and overall performance. So not only does the range increase, but the lighter weight of the vehicles also improves their performance.
Another important advantage is cost. Because Panasonic argues that new batteries will reduce production costs in the long run. Achieving the same range with fewer battery cells will allow manufacturers to save on materials and production processes. In addition, increased efficiency with less weight could also contribute to making electric vehicles more affordable for consumers.
