Peugeot has once again attracted attention with the Peugeot Polygon Concept, showcasing the technological infrastructure for its new 208 model, expected to be launched in 2027. This futuristic design centers on the “Hypersquare” square steering wheel and “steer-by-wire” technology, which will elevate the brand’s iconic i-Cockpit design.
Peugeot Polygon Concept and the “Hypersquare” Steering Wheel
The French automaker has long demonstrated its vision of the future with futuristic concept cars. The Polygon Concept continues this tradition, showcasing the technologies we will see, particularly in the third-generation 208, scheduled for 2027, and the new 2008 models in 2028. Chief among these innovations is the digital, touch-sensitive square steering wheel called the “Hypersquare.”

The most important feature of the Hypersquare steering wheel is its “steer-by-wire” technology. This system eliminates the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels (the steering column). Instead, all commands are transmitted entirely electronically. Peugeot notes that this technology has been used safely in the aviation industry for years, aiming to alleviate potential reliability concerns.
This new system aims to improve driving comfort, especially at low speeds. While a standard steering wheel rotates approximately three times for a full turn, the Hypersquare steering wheel’s maximum turning angle will be only 170 degrees in either direction. This allows drivers to complete maneuvers like parking or making U-turns quickly and with much less effort, without ever taking their hands off the wheel.
The Polygon concept’s interior demonstrates that technological innovations aren’t limited to the steering wheel. There’s no traditional screen for the instrument cluster or multimedia interface. Instead, all information is projected directly onto the windshield via a massive 24 cm wide and 74 cm high (approximately 31 inches) head-up display. This minimalist approach allows the driver to focus on the road.
