The PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been a huge success in the short time since its launch. The console set a record as Sony’s most profitable gaming console to date. And that’s despite selling less than the PS4.
PS5 is Sony’s most profitable console generation just three years after its launch
According to Sony’s 2024 Business Segment Meeting, the PS5 has generated a total of $106 billion in sales and $10 billion in operating profit since its launch. These figures make the PS5 Sony’s most successful PlayStation console, surpassing the PS4.
The PS4 generated $107 billion in sales and $9 billion in profit. While the PS4’s console generation lasted nearly seven years, the PS5 managed to achieve this success in just four years.
This meteoric rise came despite a shortage of parts in the first two years of the PS5’s release and the challenges of the pandemic. Supply chain issues during the COVID-19 pandemic made the PS5’s affordability difficult.
But despite these obstacles, the PS5 outsold the PS4. As of April 2023, the PS5 has reportedly sold 38.5 million units worldwide. Sony had set a lifetime sales target of 100 million units for the PS5 and is taking firm steps to reach this goal.
Sony’s success, coupled with the PS5’s powerful hardware specs, extensive game library and innovative features, has created a huge buzz among gamers. This success also proved once again how strong a player Sony is in the gaming world. The PS5 has been a source of great satisfaction for gamers and investors alike.
The rise of the PS5 has cemented Sony’s leadership in the gaming console market, while also setting high expectations for future console generations. What do you think? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
