The rumored Samsung H8 foldable has surfaced in GSMA listings, pointing to a fresh design path and possibly Samsung’s answer to the iPhone Fold.
Samsung H8 foldable appears with a new model number

A new Samsung foldable device has popped up in IMEI and GSMA databases, carrying the model number SM-F971U. This ID doesn’t match any current Galaxy Z Flip or Fold patterns. That detail alone suggests we’re not looking at a follow-up to the Fold7 or Flip6.
Instead, the listing points to a device codenamed “H8.” And given how carefully Samsung manages its model structure, the Samsung H8 foldable looks to be part of an entirely new category.
Not the Galaxy Z TriFold this one’s different
The Galaxy Z TriFold is finally launching after months of anticipation, but the Samsung H8 foldable isn’t it. TriFold units follow a different internal code, and this new model doesn’t match.
This raises the possibility that Samsung is preparing a third foldable line one that may adopt a square, 1:1 aspect ratio display. That format was previously linked to a rumored Galaxy Z “Wide Fold,” aimed squarely at competing with the expected Apple iPhone Fold.
Samsung H8 foldable may target Apple’s first foldable
Leaks dating back to September claimed Samsung had a square-style foldable in development, designed to feel more like a book than a smartphone-tablet hybrid. With Apple’s own foldable device still unconfirmed but widely rumored for 2026, Samsung could be positioning the Samsung H8 foldable as a direct rival.
While no hardware specs have leaked yet, the idea of a wider display suggests a more symmetrical user experience and better support for productivity apps.
Model number suggests new foldable class
Recent Galaxy Z Flip devices carry model numbers like SM-F7x6, while the Fold7 keeps Samsung’s SM-F9x6 structure. By contrast, SM-F971U marks a break from both series.
That shift implies:
- A new form factor
- A separate foldable category
- No direct lineage from existing Z-series devices
- Possibly a testbed for wider global launch later
It’s unclear if this new foldable will carry the “Z” branding or spin off into a standalone line.
Launch window remains unknown for now
While the Samsung H8 foldable has been spotted in official databases, Samsung hasn’t shared launch plans. With the Z TriFold rollout underway, this new device may appear later in 2026, potentially alongside or just ahead of Apple’s first foldable.
For now, it remains a codename and a model number, but that’s exactly how Samsung’s most innovative devices usually start.
