It has been revealed that Samsung has filed a new foldable phone patent. The patent the company has filed will allow the device to fold both inward and outward. Most foldable phones used today fold inward to protect the larger main screen, while a smaller cover screen is located on the outside.
However, this design requires an additional screen for users to access basic functions. Samsung’s new patent eliminates this need and allows the device to fold in both directions.
Samsung is coming with a phone that can fold inward and outward
According to the patent descriptions, Samsung will use special support plates and separate folding axes to enable the device to fold in both directions. This design aims to increase the flexibility of the phone while maintaining its durability.

This new screen structure developed by Samsung with ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology includes flexible polymer substrates and flexible adhesive layers under the screen. In this way, the risk of damage to the screen, which can be folded both inward and outward, is minimized.
Samsung introduced a similar concept device called “Flex In & Out” in 2023. However, there is no statement on whether this model will be commercially available. The new patent is thought to be an improved version of this concept.
It is not yet clear whether the company will include this design in future foldable phone models. However, this development shows that Samsung will continue its innovative approach in the foldable phone market.
