Hyundai Motor Group has introduced an in-car surveillance system to help drivers in emergencies. This feature, which is still at the idea stage, includes microphones that constantly listen inside the vehicle. If these microphones hear sounds such as screams or explosions, they are connected to the 112 line.

Hyundai will monitor you against emergencies with H-SOS

The concept, called “H-SOS”, won a bronze award at Hyundai’s annual Festival of Ideas. The project includes microphones, cameras and sensors that constantly listen to their surroundings. If the system hears a sound, such as a scream or an explosion, it takes measures to draw attention to the vehicle.

If it detects an accident, H-SOS activates the vehicle’s headlights and horn. It also automatically notifies the police and transmits the video recorded in the vehicle.

The project has attracted a lot of attention, especially for accidents in remote areas. However, one of the biggest problems of H-SOS is that it completely ends privacy. In other words, the tracking of movements and sounds inside the vehicle has led to privacy concerns. How Hyundai will store this data is also a matter of debate.

Hyundai has said that H-SOS aims to improve security. But it believes its surveillance capabilities will be constrained by strict rules on data access, use and storage. It also acknowledged the criticism regarding data security.
