A company that supplies batteries to companies such as Apple and Samsung has taken an important step in battery technologies. The company, TDK, said it could make great breakthroughs in battery performance and capacity thanks to its new technology. It claimed it could offer 100 times more energy density.
Battery with 100 times more energy density developed
TDK announced that it has developed a material for solid-state batteries that offers 100 times more energy density than existing solutions. Called CeraCharge, the solid-state battery uses a solid electrolyte based on lithium alloy and oxide.
This innovative combination enables the batteries to have an energy density of 1000Wh/L. That’s a 100-fold increase compared to the mass-produced batteries currently used in Apple devices.
The battery technology, which the company claims is revolutionary, can offer longer battery life to various technological devices. Smartphones, watches, headphones and other wearable devices can be charged weekly or monthly.
In addition to the huge increase in energy capacity, TDK stated that the oxide electrolyte makes the battery safer. This eliminates the risk of overheating and explosion. The new batteries also comply with EU regulations banning single-use batteries.
TDK said it is working to put this technology into mass production. It plans to offer sample shipments to customers such as Apple and Samsung next year.
