The powerful flagship processor Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was officially launched on the promised date. The processor was revealed at 2022’s Snapdragon Summit event. The processor, which will power many flagship Android phones like Samsun Galaxy S23 models in 2023, raises the performance bar even higher. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will soon be used by ASUS, Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Sony, Xiaomi, and ZTE.
Details about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
The 4 nm processor combines one “Prime” Cortex X3 running at 3.2 GHz + two Cortex-A715 cores running at 2.8 GHz + two Cortex-A710 cores running at 2.8 GHz + three Cortex-A510 cores running at 2 GHz. The Gen 2 brings support for new, faster memory technologies. For RAM it works with LP-DDR5X at up to 4,200MHz (up from LP-DDR5 at 3,200MHz). For storage, it can use the new UFS 4.0 format (up from UFS 3.1). As an overall package, the processor delivers approximately 35 percent more performance and 45 percent more efficiency than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
It already offers WiFi 7 support, which provides high-speed wireless connectivity with 5G-enabled dual SIM support via the Snapdragon X70 modem. Unlike MediaTek’s recently introduced high-end mobile processor, it also maintains 32-bit support. So Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is also backward-compatible. Also, the processor will come with Bluetooth 5.3 support. The processor offers hardware Ray Tracing support with its 25 percent faster Adreno 740 GPU unit. In addition, the processor is also empowered in artificial intelligence operations.
The processor can easily handle 200-megapixel cameras and can easily shoot 8K 30 FPS HDR videos. It has a very high-performance real-time photo processing feature for the camera. It can intelligently detect all objects in the frame and process them separately from each other. In addition, if users want to use it, it can even remove reflections on glossy surfaces. The flagship processor has also improved audio, with built-in support for 48kHz lossless audio and latency down to 48ms.
