Qualcomm has officially unveiled its new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, poised to revolutionize the smartphone world. Positioned just below the company’s flagship Elite series, this new chipset aims to deliver flagship performance at a more accessible level. This processor, which we’ll see particularly in high-end phones focused on price-performance, features significant improvements over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Features and Performance
Developed on TSMC’s 3nm process, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 boasts significant performance. It’s based on the advanced Oryon CPU architecture seen in the Elite model. However, some optimizations have been made to its configuration to suit a wider range of users. The chipset features a setup consisting of two main cores clocked at 3.8 GHz and six performance cores.

According to data shared by Qualcomm, this new processor offers 36% higher performance and 42% better energy efficiency compared to the previous-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. On the graphics front, we’re greeted by an advanced GPU that supports ray tracing technology. This GPU provides an 11% performance increase compared to the previous model, while reducing energy consumption by 28%. Furthermore, a 46% speed increase in AI processing suggests that next-generation phones will run AI features much smoother.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 also boasts powerful camera features. Thanks to its triple ISP (Image Signal Processor), dynamic range is quadrupled. The processor supports up to 320MP photos and AI-assisted video processing. However, a key point to note is that the new processor doesn’t support 8K video recording. Users can only shoot video at up to 4K 120fps. This suggests that 8K recording is a privilege reserved for the Elite series.
Connectivity features include the latest standards, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and integrated satellite support. According to industry reports, the first phones using this processor are expected to hit the market in the coming weeks. Manufacturers like OnePlus, Vivo, and Motorola are known to be working on models with this chipset. It’s highly likely that the OnePlus models expected to be unveiled soon will feature this processor.
