Sony FX5 Cinema Camera Launches With Revolutionary Full-Frame Sensor

Japanese technology giant Sony has officially unveiled the Sony FX5, a powerful new addition to its Cinema Line, designed to meet the rigorous demands of independent filmmakers and professional content creators. Announced this week as the successor to the highly popular FX3, this compact camera introduces long-awaited “Open Gate” recording capabilities and advanced artificial intelligence integration. By combining a newly developed 16.6-megapixel full-frame sensor with professional-grade color science, the FX5 aims to redefine the standards of mobility and image quality in the industry. The device is scheduled for a global release in mid-August, targeting a professional segment that requires both portability and high-end cinema performance.

The Sony FX5 Features Advanced Sensor Technology
At the core of the FX5 lies a state-of-the-art 16.6-megapixel full-frame “fully-stacked” Exmor RS CMOS sensor. This hardware is bolstered by a dedicated AI processing unit that significantly enhances subject tracking, including human posture estimation, eye, face, and body recognition. 
Furthermore, the camera introduces Auto Tracing White Balance, which utilizes both visible and infrared sensor data to maintain color accuracy in fluctuating light. Out of the box, the system captures 5K footage at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps, with future firmware updates expected to push these capabilities to 5K at 120 fps and 4K at 240 fps.
Open Gate Recording Expands Creative Possibilities
The most significant innovation in the FX5 is its support for Open Gate recording, allowing users to utilize the entire 3:2 aspect ratio of the sensor. This feature provides immense flexibility for vertical content creators and filmmakers who require extra room for cropping during post-production. 
Direct internal 16-bit linear RAW recording eliminates the need for bulky external equipment.
By utilizing Sony’s proprietary X-OCN format, the camera ensures that massive data files are compressed efficiently, thereby accelerating the post-production workflow. 
Low Light Performance Is Significantly Enhanced
The FX5 addresses the challenges of low-light cinematography with a triple base ISO system, offering settings at 800, 4000, and 12800. This configuration minimizes noise in dark environments, ensuring clean footage.
Additionally, the integration of a Dual Gain system allows the sensor to merge high and low gain data, resulting in a dynamic range exceeding 15 stops. 
Ergonomic Design Meets Professional Requirements
While sharing a similar form factor with the FX3, the FX5 is slightly heavier to accommodate its professional-grade internals and advanced cooling fan. The device features a 3.5-inch, 4-axis tilting touchscreen display and a native de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses. Connectivity options include dual CFexpress Type A/SDXC card slots, full-size HDMI, and dual USB Type-C ports. The unit is powered by a new NP-SA100 battery, which offers 1.3 times the capacity of previous models.
The Sony FX5 will hit the market in mid-August with a body-only price of $4,900 and a $5,500 kit option including the XLR-H2 handle.
