Sony is strengthening its claim in the mobile imaging field with a new sensor. The Lytia LYT-828 camera sensor, which the company officially introduced, offers 50 megapixel resolution and stands out especially with its wide dynamic range capability. The LYT-828 is the successor to the previous model, the LYT-818, and is designed to be used for both main and auxiliary cameras.
Sony announces its new generation camera sensor
The 1/1.28 inch (12.49 mm diameter) sensor has a stacked CMOS structure. This architecture provides faster data transfer and better light sensitivity. One of the biggest innovations in the sensor is the Hybrid Frame-HDR (HF-HDR) technology developed by Sony.
This system combines the single-frame HDR method called Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) with multi-frame HDR, and collects data obtained from different exposures in a single image. This means that the LYT-828 reaches the highest level of dynamic range Sony has ever offered in a mobile sensor.
This range of over 100 dB prevents light bursts in bright areas while minimizing loss of detail in dark areas. Images become closer to the natural perception of the human eye. Thanks to the Loss-Less Exposure (LLE) support offered for exposure control, more precise and balanced shooting can be achieved. At the same time, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) has also been significantly improved.
Thanks to Sony’s special circuit architecture, detailed photos with minimal grain are achieved even in low-light environments. This design suppresses random noise generated during electrical signal conversion, providing clean and clear images. In addition, the HDR mode can be continuously active not only during photo shooting, but also during preview and video recording. This feature ensures that the preview image seen on the screen and the captured frames are closer to each other.
Another highlight of the sensor is its energy efficiency. It can operate with low energy consumption even in modes that require high processing power, such as HDR. This means that improved image quality can be maintained on mobile devices without affecting battery life. Mass production of the LYT-828 will begin at the end of August.
