Sony has once again sparked discussions with its statements about the future of the PlayStation 5 and the possibility of players switching from consoles to PCs. Despite the rising prices of the PlayStation 5 and ongoing debates, the Japanese tech giant has declared that it doesn’t see players transitioning from consoles to PCs as a significant risk.
Sony Highlights the Console Lifecycle and the Rise of the PS5
In a shareholder meeting held last month, Sony emphasized the role of exclusive PS5 games in keeping players on the console. The company noted that the PS5 is currently in the second half of its console lifecycle, with an increasing number of exclusives contributing to a growing player base. Sony also reported positive trends in the transition of PS4 users to the PS5.
According to Sony, players who have upgraded to the PS5 show significantly more interest in digital content. The company stated, “We are observing that users transitioning from the PS4 to the PS5 are purchasing more software, and we view this as a positive trend,” claiming that this shift to the PS5 has proven profitable for the company.
When shareholders asked, “Will players switch from the PS5 to PC?” Sony confidently responded that it has no concerns on this matter. The company explained, “We haven’t observed any trend confirming that users are moving to PCs, and we don’t see this as a major risk in the near future,” underlining that the likelihood of console players migrating to PCs is minimal.
However, last August, the price of the PS5 in Japan was raised by 13,000 yen (approximately $85), which led to a decline in sales and a boost in Xbox sales. Despite this, Sony maintains that this price hike will not push players toward PCs.
