The Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic announcement at The Game Awards 2025 generated both excitement and controversy. Claims that the new project from Casey Hudson, creator of Knight of the Old Republic (KOTOR) and Mass Effect, wouldn’t be released before 2030 were met with a swift response from Hudson himself.
Jason Schreier: “It could be a PlayStation 7 game”
Bloomberg’s trusted game editor, Jason Schreier, had initially lowered expectations after the announcement, reminding everyone that the studio (Arcanaut Studios) was only founded this year. Schreier stated, “Even 2030 might be an optimistic estimate. Maybe it will be a PlayStation 7 game,” implying the game was far off. However, this pessimistic outlook didn’t last long.
Legendary director Casey Hudson stepped in to allay fans’ concerns. Hudson definitively denied the 2030 rumors, stating that the game would be released before 2030. But how will a newly established studio achieve this?
The answer lies in the game’s structure. Arcanaut and Lucasfilm have stated that this production will not be a massive, endless open-world game. The game will be a “story-driven” (narrative-driven) action RPG. Just like the original KOTOR, it will adopt a more focused structure, prioritizing cinematic storytelling and choices. This choice will allow them to avoid the open-world complexities that extended development time by years.
The coming years will be quite busy for Star Wars fans. Here are some other projects on the horizon:
- KOTOR Remake: Not canceled, being developed by Mad Head Games.
- Star Wars Jedi 3: Respawn is preparing the series’ finale (estimated 2027-2028).
- Star Wars Eclipse: Quantic Dream’s game is in development.
- Next Year (2026): The arcade racing game Galactic Racer and the tactical game Zero Company are coming.
So, do you trust Casey Hudson’s statement that it will be released “before 2030”? Do you think a story-driven Star Wars game would be preferable to an open-world game? Share your thoughts in the comments!
