Significant evidence has emerged that a new announcement for the Steam Controller 2 may be imminent. New data discovered in the Steam client’s beta files suggests Valve is working on new hardware.
Steam Controller 2 Data Mining Records
Discovered by @CodeReceived on X (formerly Twitter), the findings include references in the Steam beta files. These records contain notable strings such as “SteamController_V2,” “SC2,” and “Neptune.” “Neptune” is known as the codename used for the original Steam Controller.

The references uncovered in the data mining also shed light on the new controller’s functionality. The files contain phrases such as “Pairing new SC2 controller:,” “Please connect your SC2 controller:,” and “Updating SC2 controller…” Furthermore, phrases like “trigger button test” and “trackpad test” suggest that the new model may also feature similar features.
Valve has previously expressed receptiveness to the idea of a new controller. In 2023, Valve designer Lawrence Yang stated that they wanted to create a “Steam Controller 2” and had “a ton of ideas.” At the time, the team was focused on the Steam Deck. However, Yang said they would address this issue after the Deck project.
The original Steam Controller was released in 2015 and discontinued in 2019. It featured innovative features like dual trackpads, haptic feedback, and gyroscope controls. However, this design received mixed reviews from gamers. With the Steam Deck OLED launch, the timing seems ideal for Valve to announce a new controller.
