Autopilot, Tesla’s controversial automated driving support, has been plagued by lawsuits for some time. The autonomous driving support, which has been reported to have caused accidents many times before, was revealed to have saved lives twice last week.
In the US, it managed to make sudden maneuvers against a vehicle coming in the opposite direction; in China, it managed to make sudden maneuvers against a child jumping on the road.
Tesla autonomous driving prevented two accidents
In an incident in the US last week, the Model Y with autopilot technology saved its driver from an accident. At 112 km/h, a driver coming from the opposite direction was about to hit the Model Y when Tesla’s Autopilot activated. Without waiting for the driver’s reaction, the vehicle made a sudden maneuver and narrowly avoided a head-on collision.
In a video recorded in China, a child unexpectedly jumped in front of a moving Model 3. Although the electric car’s Autopilot system was not active at the time, the automatic emergency steering feature activated and maneuvered.
The lawsuit filed by a group of Tesla owners claims that the company exaggerated the driving ranges of its vehicles.
According to reports in China, the Model 3 was traveling at around 50 km/h when the child stepped in front of it. It was almost impossible for the driver to avoid the accident by braking. However, Tesla’s active safety features immediately recognized the situation and steered the vehicle to the right to avoid hitting the child.
Tesla’s autonomous pilot is often in the news for accidents. With these technologies, the company aims to prevent accidents caused by human error. The incident in Model Y and ‘showed that Tesla’s autopilot was successful.
