Tesla’s redesigned Model S sparked heated debate with its controversial yoke steering wheel. Now, the company is charging $250 for those who want the unconventional design.
Yoke steering wheel: Cool or cumbersome?
When Tesla unveiled the updated Model S, the yoke steering wheel quickly became a contentious feature. Departing from the traditional full-circle design, Tesla introduced a yoke steering wheel typically found in Formula 1 cars. While visually striking, the yoke drew criticism for its ergonomic challenges at lower speeds.
The debate surrounding the yoke led Tesla to offer a traditional steering wheel swap for dissatisfied customers. However, instead of abandoning the yoke design, Tesla has updated its online configurator for the Model S and Model X.
As reported by Electrek, customers can now choose between a standard steering wheel or the yoke steering wheel when configuring a Model S or Model X order. Tesla includes the traditional steering wheel at no extra cost, but charges a $250 premium for the yoke option.
Will customers pay more for the yoke?
It remains to be seen how many buyers will opt for the yoke steering wheel, given the added expense. Tesla seems to have accepted that the majority of customers prefer the conventional steering wheel, making the yoke a niche offering.
While Tesla adjusts its steering wheel options, General Motors (GM) is taking a different approach. GM recently announced during its Q1 2023 earnings call that it would cease production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV by the end of the year. Instead, the company plans to redirect its efforts toward electric trucks.
The decision to charge for the yoke steering wheel underscores the continuing discussion regarding its functionality and visual appeal. The move offers customers the choice between the standard steering wheel or the eye-catching yoke, but only time will tell how many are willing to pay the extra $250.
