Tesla is taking a new step for autonomous vehicle technologies. According to the announcement made by CEO Elon Musk, the company’s first paid robotaxi service will be launched in June 2025. The service, which will be run in Texas, will use the company’s fleets of vehicles such as Model 3 and Model Y.
What will Tesla robotaxi offer?
The robotaxi service will be supported by Tesla’s FSD software. This service will not use Cybercab, which is not expected to enter production before 2026. Instead, the initial fleet will consist of Model 3 and Model Y.
Elon Musk drew attention to the priority of safety at the launch of the service, stating that ‘safety is the top priority’. ‘Our solution is a generalised artificial intelligence solution. It does not require high-precision maps of the location, so we want to be careful,’ he said.
The launch of the Robotaxi service will be an important milestone for Tesla. Because it means that the company’s FSD software will be available unsupervised for the first time. Until now, only the supervised version of the technology was available to customers.
Tesla will not be the first company to offer a public driverless taxi service. Waymo operates a driverless ride-hailing service called Waymo One in several US states, including Phoenix, Arizona.
