Tesla Model Y surpasses Toyota to become the world’s best-selling car

According to data compiled by JATO Dynamics, the Tesla Model Y sold 1,223,000 units in 2023, surpassing the Toyota RAV4’s 1,075,000 units. This achievement makes the Model Y the first electric vehicle to earn the title of the world’s best-selling car. This success demonstrates Tesla’s significant presence not only in the technology sector but also in the automotive industry.

The year 2023 was a period of substantial growth for the automotive industry, with 78.32 million vehicles sold globally, marking an increase of seven million vehicles compared to 2022. Despite the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising geopolitical tensions, the automotive sector remained robust. Europe, particularly boosted by strong demand in Turkey, experienced the most significant growth.

Although Toyota lost the title of the world’s best-selling car, it still performed impressively in 2023.
