China has added a new development to its military robotics technologies. The National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in Hunan Province has introduced a new unmanned aerial vehicle designed to be the size of a mosquito. The device draws attention not only with its size but also with its technological infrastructure.

A mosquito-sized drone is designed

This micro drone, which is small enough to fit between two fingers, resembles an insect with its thin rod-shaped body, leaf-like wings and three legs as thick as a strand of hair. Thanks to its bionic design, the device, which can mimic the flight and landing capabilities of insects, can both glide in the air and land on various surfaces. Switching to energy-saving mode when landed on the ground allows the device to operate with low power for long-term missions.

This drone, which is small enough to escape visual and radar detection, has been developed especially for reconnaissance and intelligence operations to be carried out in sensitive areas. According to the statements made by NUDT, the drone has equipment that special operations units can also use in the field. It has also been shown that the device can be controlled directly with a smartphone and can perform real-time data transfer.

It is considered a serious engineering feat to fit basic components such as sensors, communication modules, power units and control circuits into a device of this scale. It is stated that the project has become possible with the latest developments in the fields of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), advanced materials science and biomimetic engineering.

No official statement has yet been made regarding whether the introduced drone will go into mass production or in which units it will be used. However, considering both its design and potential areas of use, such micro air vehicles may herald a new era in the field of military technology.
