Amazon’s long-awaited God of War series has been through a turbulent development, but a major shift last year reset the project entirely. Now, at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Ronald D. Moore — the new showrunner, writer, and executive producer — officially shared key details about the adaptation, addressing lingering questions from fans.
What to Expect from the God of War Series
First announced nearly three and a half years ago and officially confirmed in 2022, the project originally had Rafe Judkins, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby attached. However, that team later exited, and Moore, known for his work on Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Outlander, took over full creative control of the series.

Speaking during a panel at Comic-Con, Moore admitted he wasn’t a long-time follower of the God of War games, but after watching the cinematic cutscenes, he was deeply moved by the story — especially the emotional dynamic between Kratos and his son Atreus. He explained that this father-son relationship, paired with the rich, mythological world of the game, is what ultimately drew him to the project. “I’ve never seen a story quite like this before,” Moore stated.
Moore confessed he tried playing the game himself but struggled at first. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the tone of the series will closely mirror that of the game. The show will center on Kratos and Atreus as they embark on an emotional and epic journey to honor Atreus’ late mother — a narrative filled with both gravitas and visual spectacle.
While the show will explore Kratos’ mysterious past and his inner emotional struggle, Moore noted that these weighty elements will be balanced with awe-inspiring visuals and heartfelt moments.
As of now, no official release date has been announced for God of War. The next step in production will be casting the lead roles.
