Despite the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which frustrated many players, CD Projekt RED is still considered one of the most respected and reliable companies in the gaming industry. The studio recently generated excitement with The Witcher 4 teaser, but reports suggest that they are going through a difficult period. The development of the game appears to be facing major hurdles.
The Witcher 4 Developers Struggling with Unreal Engine 5!
Recently, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director Daniel Vávra claimed that CDPR’s decision to use Unreal Engine 5 for The Witcher 4 has caused significant problems. Vávra argued that Unreal Engine 5 is not well-suited for large-scale open-world games and is making development more challenging. Moreover, according to insider reports, CD Projekt RED has yet to establish the fundamental open-world mechanics for The Witcher 4.

Vávra also stated that CDPR has not fully adapted to the engine and is facing difficulties in building open-world systems. Due to these challenges, he chose CryEngine over Unreal Engine 5 for his own game.
These claims have led players to wonder if CDPR might revert to its previous engine, REDengine, which was used in The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The studio made significant technical improvements with Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, optimizing REDengine considerably. However, the decision to use Unreal Engine 5 for The Witcher 4 is now under heavy criticism due to technical struggles.
Insider sources indicate that The Witcher 4’s development is facing serious challenges. However, it remains uncertain whether CDPR will abandon Unreal Engine 5. Switching back to REDengine would mean restarting development from scratch, potentially delaying the game’s release by several years.
