There are some designs that remain unchanged for years and become a part of users’ habits, but in the world of technology, nothing lasts forever: Lenovo has taken a radical decision for the famous TrackPoint. The red TrackPoint, one of the most recognisable features of the ThinkPad series, will not be included in the new generation models. So, why was this decision taken?
Is ThinkPad TrackPoint disappearing?
Lenovo has completely removed TrackPoint in the new ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition models introduced at CES 2025. According to the company’s statement, this change was made to keep up with modern design trends and make the user experience more contemporary. However, this decision sparked controversy among ThinkPad’s long-established fan base.

Since 1992, the ThinkPad series has become indispensable for many professional users using TrackPoint. This small red button allowed precise cursor movement without the need for a mouse. Although Lenovo has defended this feature in the past, company officials say that touchpads are now widespread and TrackPoint does not appeal to all users.
What are the new ThinkPad models?
The new ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition series, where TrackPoint has been removed, is equipped with Intel’s new generation Lunar Lake processors. Available in 14-inch and 15-inch models, these models stand out with OLED display options, Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4 connections and Lenovo’s new AI Now artificial intelligence-supported software solutions.
The new models also say goodbye to the keyboard with physical buttons. Instead, a more modern and minimalist design is adopted. It is also stated that the battery life has been greatly increased in the ThinkPad X9 series. The 14-inch model will have a battery capacity of 55Wh and the 15-inch model will have a battery capacity of 80Wh.
