The end of physical copies? Digital games continue to dominate Xbox

Xbox has seen phenomenal growth in digital game sales. The results indicate that physical copies are slowly coming to an end.

Digital game sales in the United States are growing rapidly, especially among Xbox users. According to data released this week by Circana, Xbox leads the North American market in terms of digital media adoption. It is stated that 91 per cent of game sales this year were in digital format.

These announced figures contain even higher results than last year’s data. According to the reports, Xbox users’ demand for digital games shows a 1 per cent increase compared to last year. Microsoft’s game console points to a big leap in digital, with sales of physical copies weakening day by day.

According to market analyst Matt Piscatella, PlayStation 5 ranks second in this trend, with 78 per cent of game sales being digital. Although it is still far behind its competitor, there is still an increase compared to the previous year. Compared to 2023, there is a 3 per cent growth in digital sales.

This game, which was supposed to be exclusive to PS5, rejected Sony!

Nintendo’s portable console is quite far away from Xbox and PlayStation. Despite a more modest increase, Nintendo Switch made 53 per cent of its sales in digital format. This means a small increase of 1 per cent compared to the previous year.

It is emphasised that advantages such as price flexibility, special discounts and attractive promotions in the digital market encourage consumers to prefer this format.
