Microsoft has announced a new solution to reduce the visibility of Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors, a common occurrence on screens used in public spaces and a symbol of the era.
Blue Screens Will Be Reduced
The company’s “Digital Signage” mode, introduced at Ignite 2025, significantly limits the duration of critical system errors. This new feature ensures that blue screens are visible for only fifteen seconds, preventing faulty screens from remaining on in public spaces for extended periods.

Microsoft states that it developed this new mode specifically for situations where automatic restarts are not possible. When Digital Signage mode is active, if a system error occurs, the error appears on the screen for a short time, after which the system automatically switches the screen off. An administrator must physically intervene with the keyboard or mouse to turn the screen back on.
The prevalence of blue screen errors in public spaces was particularly evident with the major CrowdStrike update failure in 2024. That day, thousands of Windows devices crashed simultaneously worldwide, filling screens from banks to airlines, television networks to airports with Blue Screens of Death.
Therefore, Microsoft’s efforts to develop solutions in this area were expected. Prior to this incident, the company introduced its Quick Machine Recovery feature in April, enabling the recovery of damaged Windows systems via remote access. Digital Signage is a continuation of this solution-focused approach.
