The European Commission is reportedly planning a member-wide ban on Chinese 5G network equipment in the EU. This move has been prompted by security concerns surrounding 5G infrastructure.
Why is the EU banning Chinese 5G network equipment?
According to reports, the European Commission wants to prevent the use of high-risk suppliers like Huawei and ZTE in mobile networks. Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen called on member states to implement the 5G security toolkit established in 2020.

“The security of our 5G networks is crucial for our economy,” said Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier. Regnier emphasized that failure to act quickly exposes the entire EU to a clear risk. Therefore, a new directive from the Commission could necessitate a bloc-wide ban.
Currently, each EU member state can make its own decisions regarding telecom infrastructure. Countries like Germany, Finland, and Sweden have adopted restrictions on Chinese network equipment. However, other members like Spain and Greece continue to allow Huawei and ZTE equipment in their local networks.
