Apple’s first MacBook models with OLED displays were expected to debut in 2024. However, the MacBook has been delayed twice due to problems on the production line. A new report suggests that we will not see an OLED MacBook until 2027.

Release date for OLED MacBook will reportedly be 2027

OLED technology offers significant improvements over LCD displays in terms of response time, battery efficiency and contrast ratio. Recognising these benefits, Apple plans to move from LCD to OLED displays in the MacBook Pro range.

The transition from LCD to OLED presents a number of challenges due to the higher cost of the panels. The largest company currently producing OLED for Apple appears to be Samsung Display. However, Samsung is reportedly experiencing some problems with the LTPO TFT technology it will use to produce OLED displays.

Samsung has reportedly delayed its OLED MacBook Pros due to difficulties with LTPS TFT production. The MacBook, which was originally expected to be released in 2024, is now rumoured to be delayed until 2027. However, it is claimed that during this transition period, Apple may use another technology instead of OLED.

In this sense, the MacBook Air models with the M3 chip come to the fore. The company, which announced the M2 Ultra chip at WWDC 2023, is said to be working on the M3. Apple is said to unveil the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip in 2024.

Apple used IPS LCD panels in the MacBook range for a long time. It then switched to Mini LED technology, which is a more advanced version of IPS LCD. OLED technology was used in the Apple Watch before it came to smartphones with the iPhone X. However, it has not yet been preferred for iPads or MacBooks.
