The front camera is claimed to be significantly improved in the iPhone 18, the next generation of Apple’s smartphone lineup, and the iPhone Fold, expected to be the company’s first foldable phone. Recent reports suggest that Apple will switch to a higher resolution in all new models.
The iPhone 18 Will Offer a Next-Generation Front Camera
Several sources previously suggested that all iPhone 17 models would feature a 24-megapixel front camera, but this hasn’t materialized. The iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air are now equipped with an 18-megapixel front camera with a square sensor, which Apple calls Center Stage.
This square sensor, Apple’s first in an iPhone, provides a wider field of view and captures more detail with a higher resolution of up to 18 megapixels. This technology also eliminates the need to rotate the phone to take selfies in landscape orientation.

A new report suggests that Apple will implement this upgrade in the iPhone 18 series along with the iPhone Fold. According to the report, all iPhone 18 models will feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera.
The implementation of this decision means that the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, the second-generation iPhone Air 2, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone will offer sharper, more detailed selfies and improved portrait accuracy. This upgrade is certain to be a significant improvement, especially for users who prioritize camera performance.
Meanwhile, the affordable second-generation iPhone 17e and third-generation iPhone 18e models are said to continue to feature a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.
Expectations regarding the release dates of the iPhone 18 series and iPhone Fold are also becoming clearer. The second-generation iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone are expected to launch in the second half of 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and the affordable iPhone 18e are expected to launch no earlier than spring 2027.
