Captain America 4: Brave New World, the newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), opened in China and North America on February 14. The movie centers on the story of Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, who takes on the Red Hulk in a major battle. But contrary to expectations, the movie got off to a disappointing start. Here’s why…
Captain America 4 was a disappointment: 5.3, the lowest rated movie in the series!
The movie scored only 5.3 on Douban, China’s popular movie rating site. The main point that upset Marvel fans is that Captain America 4 has the lowest score of the series. Here are the scores of the other movies in the series:
- Captain America (2011): 7.2
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014): 8.0
- Captain America: Civil War (2016): 7.9
- Captain America 4: Brave New World (2025): 5.3
Criticisms of the movie center on a few main points. The most important one is that it has a weak script. Compared to the previous Captain America movies, the story is superficial and lacks depth. Also, the action scenes are not impressive enough. Marvel fans think that the fight scenes in the movie are insufficient and repetitive.
In addition, character development was also found lacking. The character development of the new Captain America played by Anthony Mackie was not handled well enough. On the other hand, Harrison Ford’s appearance as Red Hulk stands out as one of the most admired elements of the movie.
The movie has so far grossed only 109.8 million dollars worldwide. This is considered to be a low opening performance for Marvel movies. Recently, the box office performance and audience reviews of Marvel movies have been increasingly criticized. Movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels have also fallen short of expectations. Fans are rightly expecting a return to their old quality and impressive stories.
